Frost Engineering & Consulting acted as the field assessor and project engineer for the structural evaluation and restoration of this South Bend, Indiana steelworks storage facility. The 80-year-old facility had succumbed to excessive deflection of most of its columns due to years of wind loading and localized damage from normal operations.
Frost designed a lateral bracing system consisting of new reinforced concrete foundations, steel x-bracing, and specially shaped gusset plates to aid localized column replacements in stabilizing the building. To complete this project, Frost needed to consult and utilize specifications from previous versions of the AISC Steel Construction Manual, as various existing elements of the framework were evaluated for further use.
