Built in 1909 as a residence hall, the five-story Walsh Hall in the University of Notre Dame’s famous Main Quad underwent extensive renovation in 2016 – 2017. The renovated building includes over 45,000 gross square feet of floor space, and the total construction cost is expected to be above $6 million. Frost Engineering & Consulting served as the design engineer for the new structural steel framing, timber floor framing, reinforced masonry elevator shaft and shear walls, as well as the concrete foundations. All structural systems were designed to carry both gravity and lateral loads. Frost relied on our wide-ranging experience structurally renovating older buildings to ensure that all shear and bearing connections into the building’s existing materials, including century-old unreinforced clay brick masonry, were designed for safety, long-term durability, and constructibility.
