In partnership with Northstar Technologies, Frost Engineering & Consulting led the structural design of a new generation of FRP homes along the Gulf Coast, helping redefine what’s possible for building in regions prone to severe weather. Across more than a dozen residences – including a 10,000-square-foot home – this approach introduced a fully code-compliant system built specifically for high-velocity hurricane zones. It marks a major step forward in bringing advanced composite materials into everyday residential construction.

At the core of the system is FRP, forming innovative wall panels and framing that integrate seamlessly with traditional foundations and materials. The advantages are clear and immediate – resistance to saltwater corrosion, mold, insects, and long-term deterioration, along with strong thermal performance for improved energy efficiency. Its real-world performance speaks for itself: as shown in the video above, one home – still under construction – endured hurricane-force winds and severe conditions without sustaining damage, clearly demonstrating the system’s durability and resilience in some of the harshest of environments.

Lightweight prefabricated components significantly reduce build times while maintaining exceptional strength.

Beyond durability, the system is designed for smarter, faster construction. Lightweight prefabricated components significantly reduce build times while maintaining exceptional strength. The hybrid design allows builders to integrate FRP into familiar construction methods without overhauling existing practices, making adoption more accessible while still delivering a modern, high-performance result.

Most importantly, these homes are built for resilience and longevity. Engineered to withstand extreme wind speeds and flying debris, the FRP system offers a level of safety and reliability that traditional materials struggle to match. With minimal maintenance and a lifespan that can exceed residential construction utilizing traditional materials, this innovation brings lasting peace of mind – setting a new standard for coastal living.
